The strong Aussie dollar and the Olympic Games are driving more Australians into Europe this year, according to new figures.
Lastminute.com.au data found accommodation check-ins in Europe were up 41 percent in the last six months of 2011 compared to the same period the prior year while flight bookings were up 35 percent over the same period.
France proved to be most popular for Aussie travellers with flight bookings into Paris up 112 percent for the period followed by Rome and Amsterdam with a 76 percent jump.
Accommodation in Brussels also picked up by 109 percent compared to the last six months of 2010 while Paris saw an 87 percent jump and Rome 66 percent increase.
“It’s no secret the strength of the Aussie dollar has opened up a wider variety of holiday options for travellers,” a lastminute.com spokesperson explained.
“While the US received a lot of attention last year, the strength of our currency against the Pound and Euro is certainly making Europe an attractive option.
“Combine that with the upcoming Olympic Games in London, and there are plenty of compelling reasons to have a Europe trip on your agenda for 2012.”
