Heading to Ukraine or Poland for Euro 2012, or to London for the Olympics? Have a couple of key travel vaccinations, plus booster of childhood immunisations - especially measles - six weeks before you go, says Travelvax Australia.
Major measles epidemics made headlines across Europe last year with a conservative 30,000 cases recorded. While the peaks have passed, outbreaks are continuing in the Continent's eastern regions, as well as across the UK.
Measles vaccination is especially important for Aussie football fans planning to catch the action of the European Football Championship between June 8 and July 1.
There is a significant, ongoing measles outbreak in the Ukraine, concentrated in western areas bordering Hungary, Poland and Slovakia. More than 5000 cases have been reported this year and the European Centres for Disease Contact (ECDC) says the actual number could be significantly higher due to under-reporting.
Traditionally, the peak transmission season for measles is February to June and the ECDC expects the epidemic to accelerate in the months ahead.
Measles a high risk in Ukraine
"There is no doubt that anyone who has not had measles or been vaccinated is at high risk of getting measles in Ukraine," Travelvax's medical director, Dr Ed Bajrovic said.
"Having hundreds of thousands of people from across the globe converging on the country for the football championships can only increase the already significant risk of infection.
"Fans could bring measles and other diseases with them, exposing fellow visitors and locals alike. The reverse is also likely - in Australia we've seen measles cases imported by travellers who were infected overseas."
