The doors have been flung open at Long Beach Lodge Resort's new spa-like surf club, ramping up the hospitality for surfers wanting to enjoy one of the top surfing beaches in Canada.
It all started 10 years ago when surfers would drive up to the lodge, strip down and into their wetsuits and run to the surf to catch the killer waves. Owner Tim Hackett knew he was building on one of the best surfing beaches in Canada, but he was not as familiar with a surf culture that turned his parking lot into an outdoor change room. âMy first reaction was to protect the area for my guests, but I quickly realized it was like building a lodge at Whistler and then telling people we wouldn't make it easy for them to ski,â says Hackett. âBut when I was looking into adding a spa, I realized I would be far better to upgrade our facilities to enhance the surf experience and take the surf culture to a new level with by providing this one of kind home to our surf club.â The new Surf Club at Long Beach Lodge Resort was designed with a spa like mindset, providing guests with a fully equipped centre to change, shower, decompress, and even warm up in a private hot tub and sauna following their time out on the waves. Special full length surf lockers where guests can store their boards close to the beach have also been added, along with a full time instructor so guests don't have to go far to learn how to surf. A coffee bar and retail shop was also designed for hanging out, trading surf stories, and watching video footage on large screens around the room. To celebrate the opening of the new surf club, Long Beach Lodge Resort has put together an Epic Surf Pac package so guests, both new to the sport or experienced surfers, can have an epic surfing experience in Tofino. It includes one night's accommodation; a surf lesson and equipment rental at the Surf Club Centre; a professional souvenir photo of the guest's surf experience; a $50 Cdn food and beverage credit; and a home-baked, continental buffet breakfast served in the Great Room. Rates start at $219 Cdn per person based on quad occupancy in a Rainforest Cottage â featuring two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a full kitchen, a living area with gas fireplace, and a hot tub. For a Lodge room, rates start at $299 Cdn per person based on double occupancy â the beachfront Lodge has 41 luxurious rooms, the majority of which have spectacular ocean views and fireplaces.âThe view from our Great Room is all about the surf. Our guests come here and watch the action, and it becomes addictive. To feed that addiction we can now direct our guests to our very own surf school and experiences,â says Perry Schmunk, general manager at Long Beach Lodge. âWe view our club as the perfect place to bring a group of girlfriends together to learn how to surf or for friends and couples who want to brush up on their skills with private lessons.â Cox Bay beach is a world-renowned surf beach with reliable waves year-round. At the north end of the beach, a rocky point provides bigger, harder waves for more experienced surfers, while the central portion of the beach offers quality beach break, perfect for beginners. To provide an all-encompassing surfing experience, the Surf Club Centre also offers on-site surfing lessons and equipment rentals.
