eTravelBlackboard: Travelers urged to study foreign languages
Turism&Travel   Dr Milena Savova is the Director of NYU-SCPS  Department of Foreign Languages, Translation and Interpreting   Preparing for an overseas vacation involves more than just packing a bag and thumbing through a phrase book, says New York University’s Dr Milena Savova, who encourages would-be travelers to undertake a three-week intensive language course pre-trip.

Often, newly arrived travelers may know how to ask a question in a foreign language, but they may not understand the reply, Dr Savova told e-Travel Blackboard. “We want to make sure that people can communicate beyond the phrase book.” New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies offers three-week intensive language classes over the summer for the beginner or low intermediate speaker. Classes include cultural field trips to ethnic communities in New York and make use of “authentic materials” to provide students with “a more comprehensive course”, Dr Savova said. For visitors to New York City, accommodation can be arranged at the NYU dormitories, making the course part of a vacation in and of itself. New York University’s School of Continuing and Professional Studies also offers evening courses over the spring and fall. Source = e-Travel Blackboard: G.A
