Fantasy and fictitious trilogies including Hunger Games and Fifty Shades, topped the Travelodge 2012 Books Left Behind Index.
Books from E.L. James Fifty Shades novel trilogy, Suzanne Collins Hunger Games triad and Stieg Larsson's Millennium trinity took the top nine spots.
Our 2012 Books Left Behind Index has revealed we are a nation addicted to trilogies, this is probably so that we can flee the reality of gloom and doom for a world of fantasy, Travelodge spokesperson Shakila Ahmed said.
In the past the list has been dominated by celebrity biographies and chick literature.
Outside of the trilogies, the only book to make the top 10 was The Help by Kathryn Stockett.
Hotel staff reported the popular Shades of Grey trilogy has been left behind by both business and leisure customers of all ages, with 7000 copies found since the books release.
Customers cannot get enough of Mr Grey and Miss Steele, they are even reading the book whilst eating breakfast and dinner, Ms Ahmed said.
Over the past 12 months, more than 21,000 books were left behind in Travelodge hotel rooms.
Staff at Scarborough Travelodge found a bag of Karma Sutra books which belonged to an elderly couple staying for a week, while the staff at Leamington Spa Travelodge found a suitcase of Mills & Boon books which belonged to a middle aged couple and the hotel manager at Peterborough Travelodge found a briefcase of superhero comics which were left behind by a CEO who stays at the hotel regularly.
