Despite the economic crisis in Europe, happily the number of European tourists to Indonesia has continued to show growth month by month. Some 17,343 Germans spent their holidays in Indonesia in August, more than the 16,233 in July. Similarly, 25,756 French nationals came to Indonesia during August, up from the 23,354 in July.
There was, however, a steep drop in the number of Dutch tourists: 13,528 came to Indonesia in August, compared to 22,930 in July. This was also the result of aggressive promotional efforts in Europe, expounded Sentot Bangun Widoyono, Statistics Director for Finance, Technology, Information, and Tourism of the National Statistics Board.
The Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy remains optimistic that despite the global economic slowdown especially in Europe and the United States, the target of 8 million international visitors to Indonesia in 2012 will be met. In the coming months, the Ministry together with the tourist industry will be attracting more tourists from Indonesia's major markets of Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, China, South Korea, and Japan.
